NEW MATERIAL MADE FROM WORTHLESS WASTE WOOD
It has been estimated that in the decade following 2010, 10 million hectares of forest were cut down each year, equating to a net loss of 4.7 million hectares. To help combat the global deforestation crisis, one design group – Studio Yumakano in Japan – is making use of organic waste to create its own wood-like alternative. The new material, made from tree and foliage scraps, has been used to design a range of furniture items, called the ForestBank collection. If projects such as this one scaled fast enough, the need for wood could be decreased, helping to keep more mature trees alive and working as active carbon sinks.
